Also in the news: studies show that human contact and affection are beneficial for little kids. Not a lot of revenue involved, though, unless you count mental health as something of worth.

Good to see that conservatives are focused on the widespread problems that really matter to people internationally and not just down here in the US!

Yeah, she is several tiers above Vance on the “quality human” scale regardless of whatever prejudices of hers fed into the issue.
Aside from the fact that we’re talking about a civil matter between private citizens, you can legitimately get serious government intervention and punishment for certain types of speech. Let’s say you yell fire in a theater, or threaten the president, or publish classified national security secrets.
People who claim to be free speech absolutists (like one of the private parties in this discussion!) usually just mean for them or for stuff they disagree with.
On one hand, sure, I have eyes and a mostly functional memory. It seems clear cut. Incredibly lucky shitbag.
But on the other hand, as a proper American I know that the more money and fame you have, the more of a smart person and good human you are. It’s just a rule of nature. And if you’re a terrible parent estranged from your own children, that just shows how dedicated you are to the mission! How else are we going to get teslas and iPhones?
Hopefully I don’t need the /s, but Poe’s law exists for a reason.
I think it’s also the responsible thing to limit our young people to the kiloton range until they are 21.
It really is bizarre how many people seem to just accept lower standards for police than for random Joe gun owner off the street. It’s not confusing though; it’s just another facet of the great team sport of society for many people.
If we’re supposed to value and respect our police, maybe we should actually expect good things from them!
Fair enough. Thanks!
Fortunately with Linux, choice is the name of the game!
I’m curious why you wouldn’t recommend mint. Is it due to some kind of problem, or is it just a personal taste thing?
I use mint daily so if there are potential issues I just want to know!
As an American, this line short circuited my brain:
Police there still carry guns on the regular
I live in a quiet but growing suburban town that’s closer to rural areas than the nearest city. When I walk my kid to elementary school (how European of us, lol) the police officer working as a crossing guard for the kids still has their gun, taser, bulletproof vest, and all their other gear on.
And it’s not a school-specific thing. You just never see cops without their weapons here. Armed and armored is just part of the uniform, essentially.
It is not blameless, for sure.
Agreed here also. I would imagine there’s some kind of correlation with intelligence, but I also bet it’s even more intellectual laziness like you’re suggesting. And maybe coupled with some emotional immaturity. So many people just don’t like questioning themselves, and/or see questioning one’s ideas as questioning their worth as a human being.
People absolutely get conditioned to just accept certain crazy stuff and reject reason. But that doesn’t completely release them of the responsibility of being thinking human beings. Though it’s easy to not even try when what you’re conditioned to accept is part of your identity and those close to you.
But it can happen. I’ve been consciously tuning out various types of conditioned subconscious reactions for my entire adult life.
I like to think of that stance as “positive nihilism” if that makes sense. It is liberating to really feel in your bones that it’s OK to focus on one things that really matter to you rather than the things you’ve been taught should matter to you.
“Why was it our faces that got eaten?”
I might have the exception to this. I’m able to dual boot my work laptop, as can the other engineers in my department. So it’s effectively a Linux machine under my exclusive administration. The only request from my IT department was how to format the host name.
I’m still not taking chances with that thing though, even when on my home network. The rules exist even if there’s a 99.99% chance they won’t be enforced. I have nothing to gain from doing nefarious shit on it just to prove a point, lol.
Can’t take calls? Don’t threaten ME with a good time!
This comment inspired me to go turn off microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and local network access for every app. I’ll reenable as necessary.
Yeah it’s right up there on the list of what shareholders need to survive:
Water
Food
Solid CAGR of investment portfolio
Shelter
Human contact
Etc
(CAGR being Compound Annual Growth Rate)
